She's in the Air, She's on the Ground

Safely landed and at home for several days now, I'm finally catching up on things. My photo blog is up-to-date as of yesterday, and I've uploaded to my computer my photos from my camera as well as hubby's and kids (they each inherited a hand-me-down digicam from each parent and had fun using them). I'm unpacked, school supplies have been purchased, phone calls have been returned, daughter has received her vaccine, and new health insurance is in place. I even had time to catch up with most blogs in my Reader. If you haven't received at least one comment from me in the past several weeks, forgive me. I'm still trying to make rounds and give everyone at least a comment or two, but I'm sure I've missed someone. I'm trying! I'm trying!

First of all, let me say that no longer will I be flying on an airplane without one basic, essential tool - XANAX. I have never been a nervous flyer, just a bored one. Now, however, it would seem that I am starting to suffer from anxiety attacks whenever the plane encounters even the most benign pocket of turbulence. Of course, that dip we took as we approached Chicago's Midway airport en route to Cleveland was anything but mild. The entire plane load of passengers let out a collective, "Whoa!" as we were jolted out of our seats approximately a foot. Okay, maybe it was only a couple of inches, but I felt as if I was back on the Magnum roller coaster at Cedar Point. Not a comforting feeling when you're on a freakin' airplane.

We finally arrived at my in-laws' house last Wednesday morning at 1:00 a.m. I was tired, cranky, fidgety, and in sore need of a drink. No luck as the only thing in the house was Miller Genuine Draft, and I'm not a beer drinker, so I settled for getting some hugs from Mom and then lying in bed for a few more hours, hoping for sleep but in fact fighting the fact that my body thought it was still 10 p.m. as it was back home in the west. Sigh. Where are the M*A*S*H reruns when you need them?

This trip was really about checking in on Mom and her progress. I'm happy to report that she is in good stead and making slow and steady progress. She naps every afternoon and still hasn't moved beyond walking part of a lap at the mall, but all in all, thumbs up.

Thursday night we had a family dinner at my youngest SIL's house. Hubby's brother and wife, son, daughter, and grandson also came along. We had a barbecue on the back porch, and I was effectively eaten alive by mosquitoes. Silly me - I assumed that once we grilled the food, we'd be eating inside as we do in the desert. Had it occurred to me that we would be dining with nature, I would have showered in bug spray. Sigh.

We made our obligatory trips to the store for $1.00 double dip ice cream cones, CiCi's Pizza Buffet, and Steak 'n Shake. We visited with family, and the kids got a bonus trip to Cedar Point on Saturday with Aunt V, Papa Land Warrior, and Grandpa. Mom and I opted to not burden the others with pushing us in wheelchairs (even though we really, really wanted to go), so we stayed behind and ate lunch at Applebee's before catching Mamma Mia. (I looooooove Pierce Brosnan. *grin*)

Hubby had to return home a day early to start his new position at the employer for whom he's been contracting for the past six months. He's now a direct employee - yippee for group health insurance again!

The flight home for the kids and me? Well, it was truly ghastly. I alluded to that in my previous post; if any of you live in the Midwest, you already know what Monday night was like for residents of the Chicagoland area. Our flight home was due to leave Chicago's Midway airport at 7:50 p.m. CDT, and no sooner had they loaded the pre-board passengers, then we were ordered to evacuate the plane. The control tower for O'Hare and Midway was evacuated due to tornado warnings. As the kids and I exited the plane, we heard tornado warning sirens screaming throughout the terminal. We spent the next two and a half hours sitting around, eating over-priced food from the restaurant closest to our gate (Miller's Pub), and watching the rain fall in sheets, accompanied by the cacophony of thunder, sirens, and kids screaming. We finally arrived back home that night past midnight, nearly three hours later than scheduled.

Okay, so to recap: I will no longer fly without assistance from Xanax, and although I love the city of Chicago, I vow never to fly through there in summer. I think I might have to rethink visiting the Midwest in the summer. I've already nixed ever visiting in winter, and now summer seems to be vexing me as well.

Whadda ya think? Am I just being a bitch? I mean, at least I didn't have to visit the emergency room, right?

Yikes, what a trip home. All the food sounded good though, well except for the overpriced stuff at Miller's Pub. I'm glad you are home safe and sound. :)

What an eventful trip! I hope you get properly prepared for any future trips :) I love to fly and so far haven't had any trouble with flights, but that's not to say it won't happen in the future.

I'm so glad your MIL is doing better. Slow and steady is good, at least she's improving and not regressing. I hope she continues to get stronger. And how cute that you guys went on a girls lunch and to a chick flick!!!

Now I'm hungry for Steak and Shake. We have a CiCi's here that my hubby likes but I can pass on that. But a chocolate shake, now that's more like it :)

So glad you're home and caught up. Hope the first few days of school go smoothly!

Good Lord Girl! How on earth do you fly so much? I wouldn't get on one of those things if my life depended on it! Glad you had a good time though, and Pierce....I'll fight you for him!! Yummy!!

Sandee: It was, indeed, an adventure coming home. Truly, though, we had a nice time visiting with family, and that's the most important thing, right?

Stacy: I wish we could have gone to a Browns training camp session, but there wasn't much time. Frankly, we're lucky got what little we DID do squeezed in! It was great to spend time with Mom, and she liked our girl time. We haven't done that in a few years. The trip to CiCi's is really for the kids; of course, not having to cook for a night is always a treat! I didn't have room for a shake at SnS - too full from the steakburger and cheese fries!

Schmoop: I don't really fly that much, but we get the opportunity to fly because hubby used to fly weekly when he worked in Southern California. He'd fly to CA for work on Monday AM and return home Friday nights. After six months, those flight credits add up quickly! Free tix? I never say no to free! Oh, and about Pierce: What is with you and me and Irish men?

Glad you all made it home safely, and that your MIL is feeling better!

There was this one time I road in a puddlejumper, 2 prop aircraft, never again. It does feel worse than any roller coaster ride I've ever been on.

My mom saw Mama Mia, and thought it was fantastic. One review I read, said that Pierce Brosnan wasn't a very good singer in it. No kidding, but who would go to just hear him sing, I just want to drool over him. *wink*

Welcome back DS!

What the kids and I have problems with is the ear problem during landing.

Well, at least you made the trip to Steak n Shake. Yum. It's going to be tough not coming to Ohio in Summer or Winter, because those are the only two seasons that we have here. Cheers Dear!!

I'll comment once I've stopped drooling over the cheese fries.

Brosnan is yummy, he can Remington Steele me any day of the week ;)

Ok slutty talk done. Glad you made it home in one piece. I hate O'Hare personally. I refused to connect through there on my Atlanta trips even if I had to pay more.

I've never taken Xanax so don't know how it might be - but I know that a huge Beer can help too. Glad your mom is doing okay.

JUST KIDDING...SMOOCH

OMG...I love flying...but I only have one kid! Turbulence is kinda my thing.

Then again, Xanax makes me pass out. Seriously. Just HALF of one of those little blue pills? I'm OUT. Cold. And better let me sleep for a good 12 hours.

Christine: Mamma Mia was a fun movie. It was fun to see Meryl Streep let loose, and Pierce was so handsome (as usual). Who cares if he's not a great singer?

Daddy Forever: The ear thing can be vexing as well. I don't usually chew gum, but I did on that flight.

Matt: I know; I'm hosed. I'm really glad they built a Steak 'n Shake right in Brunswick so we don't have to venture far from Mom and Dad's house, though.

Anndi: And they were mighty fine indeed!

Starr: You and most heartily agree with Mr. Brosnan. He can Steele me anytime as well! I'm with you on O'Hare; the passengers there were ALL evacuated to baggage claim on Monday night. What a zoo!

Karmyn: Xanax is a great little pill for me. I take them to alleviate the anxiety when I have to have an MRI. It's like a good champaign high without the bubbles.

Vinny: I knew you'd have a definite opinion on both Steak 'n Shake and Cici's. Cici's is really for the kids; it's easy, cheap, and we don't have to cook. And, yes, I AM a whiny princess!

Tigger: Fine, then you can fly for me. I love roller coasters, but I can't stand the idea of leaving my seat at 30,000 feet! I've only taken Xanax a couple of times for MRIs, but they were wonderful little things for me.

I'm glad y'all had a good time and SO HAPPY that your MIL is doing well! I haven't flown since 1996, but if I was an unhappy flyer then, I think I would have to be completely put out now. ;)

September is the best month, weatherwise, in the Midwest. And pretty, especially late in September, since nature is turning colors.

Good luck to your DH!

What a trip!
While I love Cedar Point, I think this weekend a nice trip to Applebees and Mamma Mia would have been more up my alley.
Glad you're home safe.
