Several months ago, I started carrying around a bag of hard candy in my purse to help me NOT consume so much fluid. Many of you remember how last year I was hospitalized because I had to be drained of the excess fluid (all told, 35 pounds!!!) I was carrying, and I have no desire to repeat that torture. I know the sugar isn't much better for me, but I really don't want to consume sugar-free candy. I figure, if I'm going to eat something, it might as well have the good sugar rather than the fake garbage. Besides, I really don't eat that many pieces of candy in a day.
My personal choices have been Brach's Lemon Drops and Jolly Rancher hard candy drops. The lemon drops are good for helping to produce more saliva, and the Jolly Ranchers? Well, I just like them a lot. (BTW, my personal faves are watermelon and green apple. I give my daughter all of the blue raspberry ones.)
Anyway, as I was meandering around the internet looking for candy sites, I came across this place that sells retro candy. You know, the candy you ate when you used to hike up to the local drugstore with your allowance to buy your favorite candy bar which only cost a nickel? Okay, maybe I'm dating myself a bit, but you get the point.
I started reminiscing a bit about those lazy summer days walking to the Hook's Drugstore to buy my Chunky bar, when I came across this video on the website. There was no explanation as to why this was on the site, but curiosity overcame me, and I just had to hit "Play."
It's worth a look-see because, after all, without their sacrifices, our lives wouldn't be so sweet.

Can you chew gum? I find that if I don't have water around it helps me feel not so dry in the mouth. But I know some people who hate gum and then others who can't chew it...
I am absolutely convinced that real sugar is no worse, or maybe even better for you than all the substitutes they put in sugar-free candy and chocolate and whatever.
And I love lemon drops. Really anything lemon.
I LOVE Old Time Candy... I get my "Turkish Taffy" there...though they call it something else now...
I can not chew gum..I end up swallowing it shortly after it goes in my mouth...go on analyze that! LOL
not playing MM today...but I did watch the video...well done. There is something about the parent with children shots that catch me....and I am sure you too.
Not quite sure how I ended up in the wrong place. Yes I was remembering penny candy and Chicken Sticks.
I won't eat the sugar substitutes either!
My fav retro candy is the Necco Wafers!
I do remember all your water retention last year. Enjoy the good sweet hard candy.
Love the video. Right on the money.
Have a terrific day. Big hug. :)
well that video made me cry. sigh.
I'm going to go check out the candy store. I remember the old commercial for chunky (Open wide for chunky)
Songbird, I suck on hard candy to produce more saliva too. I can't imagine having 35 pounds of excess water in your body. Oh my!
I ♥ jolly ranchers. When I was in school, I remember buying them from the book store for a nickel. :) Yummy!
I don't remember the old fashion candy stores, but I do like to buy the bulk candy at Winco.
I remember Chunky bars, and Big Hunk.
Watermelon and green apple are also my favorite Jolly Ranchers.
They have Teaberry gum!
Remember when Jolly Ranchers came in those long sticks? Sour Apple and Cherry are THE BEST.
